GTU backlog rules in short
You get a backlog when you score FF (below 35 marks) in a subject. GTU lets you carry up to 4 pending backlogs. If you cross 4, you can be detained for one year. The semester just before your current one is not counted.
That is the core of it. This guide shows how the count works, how the rules changed for the 2018 batch, what the fees look like, and how to plan your exams so you never reach the limit.

FAQs
What is a backlog, ATKT or KT?
These three words mean the same thing at GTU.
Backlog: a subject where you got an FF grade.
ATKT: "Allowed to Keep Terms." You move to the next semester with failed subjects pending.
KT: the short form students use for ATKT.
GTU grades on a 10-point scale. AA is 10 points. DD is 4 points and the lowest pass. FF is 0 and means fail.

This table comes from an older GTU rules summary on GTU Study Material. Check your own scheme for any change.
You can also get a backlog by missing an exam. GTU treats an absent student as not cleared, even if you were sick.
GTU detain rules: the 4 backlog limit
This is the rule most students ask about.
At any time, you can have at most 4 backlogs pending.
If you have more than 4, the college does not allot new subjects. You are detained for one year.
Backlogs from the semester just before your current one are not counted.
GTU confirmed point 3 in a 2011 circular. It says earlier backlogs count no matter how many attempts you made. Only the just-previous semester is left out.
Why GTU has this rule
Each semester has about five or six subjects. If you carry too many failed subjects, the new load becomes too heavy. The limit forces you to catch up before the gap grows. It also protects you from reaching the final year with a pile of old papers.
How to count your backlogs step by step
Many students count wrong and panic, or count wrong and relax. Use this method.
Write down your current semester.
List every pending FF subject by the semester it belongs to.
Cross out all subjects from the semester just before your current one.
Add up what is left.
If the total is 4 or less, you are safe for this check. If it is 5 or more, you face detention.
Example 1: a safe count
You are in Semester 4. You have 2 backlogs in Sem 1, 1 in Sem 2 and 3 in Sem 3.
Total backlogs: 6
Counted for detention: 3 (Sem 1 and Sem 2 only)
Result: you are not detained
This is the same case Government Engineering College, Modasa uses to explain the rule.
Example 2: the same student a semester later
You move to Semester 5 and clear nothing. Now Sem 4 is the just-previous semester. Sem 3 is counted again.
Pending from Sem 1: 2
Pending from Sem 2: 1
Pending from Sem 3: 3
Counted: 6
Result: you are over the limit and face detention
The lesson is simple. A backlog that is safe today can count against you next semester.
Example 3: many backlogs, still safe
You are in Semester 4. You have 1 backlog in Sem 1, 1 in Sem 2 and 5 in Sem 3. That is 7 in total.
Only the Sem 1 and Sem 2 backlogs count here. That is 2, so you are safe. The 5 Sem 3 papers wait until you move to Sem 5, so clear them before then.
GTU rules for the 2018 batch and later
GTU changed the norms for students admitted from the 2018-19 year. The rule is stricter in the later semesters. You must clear first-year subjects before you reach the third year.
The table below follows GTU circular 5440 dated 19 July 2018.

Two points matter here:
"Any number of backlogs" only applies if your term is granted. That means you met the attendance rule.
The pattern repeats every two years. You must clear a pair of semesters before you enter the semester two years ahead.
The circular also has rows for Sem 6, 8 and 10. We left them out of the table because the scan of the original is hard to read. Check the PDF for those rows. Also check which rule applies to your admission year.
Old rule versus 2018 rule

Your admission year decides which rule you follow. If you joined in 2018-19 or later, use the 2018 table. If you joined earlier, the older rule applies. When in doubt, ask your college exam cell for the notification that covers your batch.
Example 4: entering Sem 5 under the 2018 rule
You joined in 2023. You finished Sem 4 with 1 pending paper in Sem 2. Your Sem 3 has 2 pending papers.
Sem 2 must be fully passed to enter Sem 5. You have 1 pending, so you have a problem.
Sem 3 may carry up to 4 backlogs. You have 2, which is fine.
Clear the Sem 2 paper in the remedial exam before the Sem 5 forms close. The Sem 3 papers can wait.
Attendance, term grant and subject detention
Detention is not only about backlogs. Attendance can stop you too.
You need at least 75% attendance to fill the GTU exam form and sit the end-semester exam.
Colleges may count up to 10% of absence caused by illness. This comes from the GTU circular dated 2 April 2011.
If your college detains you in some subjects, GTU shows those subjects in a separate list. You cannot pay exam fees for them.
If your college detains you for the whole semester, you cannot pay the exam fee at all.
What "term granted" means
The 2018 rule says you can carry any number of backlogs from certain semesters if your term is granted. Term grant ties to your college record. It covers attendance and the work your college asks you to complete. A student with low attendance can lose the term even with no backlogs. Ask your college what it needs from you each semester.
Exam form status
Your exam form is also checked against the backlog rule. The student portal guide lists these states:
Rejected: your college rejected the form. Contact the college office.
Approved: your college approved the form. You can now pay the fee.
Eligible to appear: this holds if your backlogs are 4 or fewer, not counting the just-previous semester. Otherwise the form is cancelled.
GTU backlog fees
Be careful with fee numbers you see online. GTU sets exam fees in each exam circular, and the amounts change.
Here is what we could confirm, with the date of each source:

We did not find a current official page that lists one fixed remedial fee. Treat these numbers as a guide only. Open the latest remedial exam circular on gtu.ac.in before you pay. Late fees apply if you miss the date.
A simple cost example
Say you have 3 theory backlogs and 1 practical backlog. Using the 2022 rates:
3 theory subjects at Rs 125 = Rs 375
1 practical subject at Rs 100 = Rs 100
Total exam form fee = Rs 475
This is an illustration, not a price quote. Your real fee may differ. Reassessment for 2 subjects at Rs 100 would add Rs 200 on top.
The cost you do not see
The form fee is small. The real cost of a backlog is time. Detention adds a full year. That year means more tuition, hostel and living costs, and a later start at work. Paying a few hundred rupees to clear a paper on time is far cheaper than that.
How to clear a backlog at GTU
Check your result. Note every subject with an FF grade.
Watch for the remedial circular. GTU posts exam form dates on its site and the student portal.
Log in to the student portal. Open Exam, then Exam form and fees.
Select your backlog subjects. Save the form so the total shows.
Pay online. Regular and remedial students use the same Pay Fees button.
Download the exam form. Keep a copy for your college.
Your college must approve the form first. If it rejects the form, contact the college office. If the last date passes, the Pay Online button stops working, so do not wait for the final day.
A semester-by-semester plan
Use this plan if you joined in 2018-19 or later. Confirm it against the circular for your batch.
Sem 1 and Sem 2: These papers carry the most weight for your future. You must pass both semesters to enter Sem 5. Clear any first-year FF at the first remedial exam.
Sem 3 and Sem 4: Keep Sem 3 backlogs to 4 or fewer. Sem 4 backlogs are allowed in any number if your term is granted, but do not rely on that. Clear Sem 1 and Sem 2 leftovers before you enter Sem 5.
Sem 5 and Sem 6: You must pass Sem 3 and Sem 4 to enter Sem 7. Check the Sem 6 row of the circular for your own case.
Sem 7 and Sem 8: This is the final stretch for four-year courses. Clear every pending paper early. Ask your college what it needs from you before the final result.
Habits that help
Keep a one-page list of all pending subjects and the semester of each.
Read the remedial circular the day it comes out.
Fill the exam form early. Fix any error before the last date.
Ask your college to confirm your backlog count each semester.
Study the paper you failed first. Look at your result and see how many marks you missed.
Mistakes that lead to detention
Ignoring old backlogs. Students focus on the new semester and forget Sem 1. The count catches up in the third year.
Skipping the remedial form. No form means no attempt, even if you studied.
Low attendance. You can clear every subject and still lose the term.
Trusting old blog posts. Rules changed in 2018. A 2012 post may not fit your batch.
Counting the just-previous semester by mistake. It is left out of the detain count, but it will count soon.
Waiting for the last date. Portal errors and fee issues can cost you the attempt.
Common myths
Myth: Missing an exam for illness is not a backlog. Fact: An absent exam counts as a backlog.
Myth: More attempts remove old backlogs from the count. Fact: The 2011 circular says backlogs count no matter how many attempts you made.
Myth: Every GTU batch follows the same rule. Fact: The norms changed for students admitted from 2018-19.
Myth: Fees are the same every year. Fact: GTU sets fees in each exam circular.
Should you ask for reassessment?
If you missed a pass by a few marks, reassessment may help. GTU allows it for up to 2 subjects per semester, whether or not you have backlogs. It costs money and a lower score is possible, so weigh it first.
What happens if you are detained?
The college does not allot new subjects. You stay back for one year. The GTU pages we read do not set out how colleges run that year. Ask your exam cell how you will repeat or clear subjects, and which exam you can sit.
Do not wait until detention arrives. Check your count before every exam form.
Frequently asked questions
How many backlogs are allowed in GTU?
You can have 4 pending at any time. More than 4 leads to detention for one year. The just-previous semester is not counted.
Is ATKT the same as KT at GTU?
Yes. Both mean you move up a semester with failed subjects pending.
What is the GTU detain rule?
A student with more than 4 counted backlogs is not given new subjects and is detained for a year. Low attendance can also detain you.
Are the last semester's backlogs counted?
No. GTU leaves out the semester just before your current one when it counts backlogs for detention.
Do the rules differ for 2018 admissions?
Yes. For admissions from 2018-19, you must clear Sem 1 and 2 to enter Sem 5. The same pattern applies to later pairs.
How much is the GTU backlog fee?
The amount is set in each exam circular. Older figures were Rs 125 per theory subject and Rs 100 per practical. Check the current circular.
Can I get detained if I miss an exam due to illness?
An absent exam counts as a backlog. A backlog from the just-previous semester is not counted for detention.
Where do I check my backlog count?
Your GTU result and the student portal exam form show it. The form is cancelled if the count is over the limit.
How much attendance do I need?
You need at least 75% to fill the exam form and sit the end-semester exam. Colleges may count up to 10% illness absence.
Can I pay exam fees for a subject I am detained in?
No. GTU shows detained subjects in a separate list and does not let you pay for them.
How many subjects can I send for reassessment?
Up to 2 per semester, whether or not you have backlogs.
Which rule applies to me, old or new?
It depends on your admission year. Use the 2018 rule if you joined in 2018-19 or later.
